Cops rushed to the scene and arrested the suspected driver.
It is unclear how many people were hit by the car, but media reports say up to 10 were injured – and two of them remain in the intensive care unit.
According to initial reports by French media, the driver was heard shouting “Allahu Akbar” while ramming the car into the crowd.
The driver then attempted to set the vehicle on fire, it has been reported.
A local resident said: “An individual in a vehicle is having fun hitting people in his path, and right here in my window, a pedestrian was hit and injured in Saint Pierre d’Oléron.”
Laurent Nuñez, France’s interior minister, said: “This morning, a driver struck several pedestrians and cyclists in Saint-Pierre-d’Oléron and Dolus-d’Oléron.
“Two victims are in critical condition and three others were injured. The driver was apprehended by the police.
“An investigation is underway. At the Prime Minister’s request, I am going to the scene.”
Thibault Brechkoff, the mayor of Dolus-d’Oléron, said: “Ten people were injured and are being treated by firefighters and paramedics.
“We are setting up a crisis centre in Dolus. The person responsible has been apprehended! All services are mobilised to manage the situation.”
It comes after four people were left seriously injured after a car ploughed into a crowd celebrating PSG’s win in France.
A young woman was left fighting for life after the “high-speed” car smashed into a group of people in Grenoble.
The car reportedly went out of control before hitting the four people, understood to be a family.
Footage from the aftermath shows emergency services working on the scene while crowds gathered on the pavements.
The driver was allegedly attempting to perform a controlled stunt but instead lost control of his vehicle, local news outlet Ouest France reports.
The family of four was rushed to the hospital – with two members understood to be in intensive care.
