Sunderland vs Arsenal preview

Relentless Arsenal are piling on the pressure in the Premier League title race and can stretch their lead to a minimum of eight points by defeating surprise package Sunderland at the Stadium of Light.

The Gunners’ standards dropped during the latter years of Arsene Wenger’s 22-year period in charge, but they have been building steadily under Mikel Arteta and, as well as playing some tidy football, they have become a nightmare to play against.

Arsenal are yet to concede a goal in the Champions League league phase and they approach the trip to Sunderland having registered eight consecutive wins-to-nil for the first time in their history.

The Gunners’ defensive excellence has beeen assisted by having a settled goalkeeper and back four with David Raya, Gabriel, Jurrien Timber and Riccardo Calafiori participating in all ten Premier League games and William Saliba featuring on nine occasions.

But there may also have been some good fortune along the way because the Gunners’ Premier League xG against (7.04), while impressive, is more than double their goals-conceded tally (three).

The run of clean sheets will have to end at some point and a confident Sunderland may fancy their chances of finding a way past Raya.

As soon as they were promoted Sunderland were being widely tipped for relegation, but they are off to an outstanding start with 18 points on the board and 28 games left to play.

Every promoted side faces huge challenges but Sunderland addressed them head on by being utterly ruthless with their recruitment drive.

They bolstered all areas of the squad and, of the players involved the playoff final victory over Sheffield United, only Trai Hume, Dan Ballard, Enzo Le Fee and Wilson Isidor have continued to be first-team regulars.

Sunderland have added athleticism, physicality and quality but perhaps their most important signing was former Arsenal midfielder Granit Xhaka, who has given them calmness and leadership right at the heart of their team.

Xhaka will be desperate to impress against his former club and his team’s chances are assisted by a spate of attacking injuries affecting the visitors’ camp,

Arsenal are heading to Wearside without six senior attackers, including key trio Noni Madueke, centre-forward Victor Gyokeres and Martin Odegaard, who would probably be a named in a first-choice starting 11.

But they found a way forward against Slavia Prague on Tuesday, winning 3-0, and can seal maximum points against Sunderland, albeit in a more evenly-matched affair.

Arsenal have won three of their five away league games by a single goal and a narrow margin of success rather than a landslide victory looks most likely on Wearside.

Granit could show his hard side

Granit Xhaka has developed a calmer temperament over the years and has collected just three cautions in his first five Sunderland appearances. However, the Swiss is sure to be fired up against his former club and looks a solid wager to commit at least a couple of fouls.

Gunners shut out sequence may come to an end

Arsenal have racked up eight successive clean sheets but they may need to score a couple of goals to secure maximum points against Sunderland, who are used to scoring in home games. The Gunners will come under pressure at times and may concede against the Black Cats, who have netted in each of their last three fixtures.

Sunderland vs Arsenal Bet Builder

Eberechi Eze to score or assist

Eze took a while to settle into his new surroundings but his influence has grown and he could come up with a major moment on Wearside.

Noah Sadiki to be carded

The athletic midfielder has been booked four times in his last four matches and could be cautioned against the leaders.

Arsenal to win corner match bet

One of the reasons Arsenal are such a threat from set-pieces is because they have so many of them. The Gunners have taken 41 more corners than they have faced in the Premier League and they can win the flag-kick count on Wearside.
