One former teammate of the Uruguayan has been left confused at the criticism the striker faced at Liverpool.
Darwin Nunez arrived at Anfield with a big reputation, but the form that earned him the move in the first place, failed to translate to English football, and he left this summer after an overly frustrating time on Merseyside.
The striker had scored 48 goals in 85 games for Benfica and the move to Liverpool looked like the natural stepping stone to progress his career, but he has now departed the Reds and playing his football in Saudi Arabia with Al-Hilal.
Nunez will be the first person to tell you that his time at Liverpool did not go the way he or the club had planned, as such a price tag meant that a starting place in the side was almost concrete, but it didn’t turn out to be that way.
The striker eventually fell out of favour with Jurgen Klopp and then his replacement Arne Slot.
Criticism was all Darwin Nunez knew during his time at Liverpool, but despite that he always played for the badge when called upon and had a smile on and off the pitch throughout.
Bayer Leverkusen defender Alex Grimaldo has insisted that he does not understand the criticism that Darwin Nunez received at Liverpool.
The full-back played with the former Liverpool striker at Benfica, before the pair went their separate ways.
Speaking to After de Post United, relayed by El Universo, Grimaldo said:
“I thought that when he went to Liverpool, he was perfect for the Premier League, the type of player, and for Liverpool above all.”
“He was a very fast, very powerful striker, with a lot of goals, a good shot. I think he’s scored a lot of goals, he’s played… I just don’t understand the criticism.”
“It always happens that when there’s a very high price, they demand double or triple, and it’s not the player’s fault, because the player has nothing to do with the price. It’s between clubs.”
“So, in the end, you go to a team like Liverpool, there’s pressure, they demand a lot of you.”
“There’s always criticism, but I think he’s scored a lot of goals and assists for Liverpool anyway.”
