England Women vs South Africa Women preview
England Women started their World Cup campaign against South Africa in Guwahati and the rivals reconvene at the venue for Wednesday’s first semi-final.
A repeat of the league-stage result would do nicely for England, who skittled the Proteas for 69 before openers Amy Jones and Tammy Beaumont wrapped up a ten-wicket win.
England have a formidable ODI record against their semi-final opponents, winning 12 of the last 15 meetings, and they finished the league stage with a convincing victory over New Zealand.
They are clear favourites to advance to Sunday’s final against Australia or India despite some patchy performances at this tournament. They survived top-order collapses to beat Bangladesh and Sri Lanka but were bowled out for 134 by Pakistan before rain saved them from defeat.

However, England’s spinners should be confident of leading them to victory, having seen Australia’s Alana King take 7-18 against South Africa on Saturday.
Sophie Ecclestone will be assessed after injuring her bowling shoulder against New Zealand so Linsey Smith, England’s other left-arm menace, should be backed to be their leading wicket-taker.
Smith bowled only four overs in the win over South Africa but picked up the key wickets of Laura Wolvaardt, Tazmin Brits and Marizanne Kapp and was named player of the match.
She took another two wickets in the Guwahati win over Bangladesh and bowled beautifully in her last two matches, claiming 2-43 against Australia and 3-30 against New Zealand.
One area in which South Africa could dominate England is six-hitting. Their number eight Nadine de Klerk has struck ten maximums at the World Cup – the most in the tournament and seven more than England’s leading six-hitter Heather Knight.
All-rounder Kapp and openers Wolvaardt and Brits also hit a long ball while only two batters in history have struck more ODI sixes than Chloe Tryon’s 73 in 100 innings.
