Erling Haaland has scored two-thirds of Manchester City’s goals when he has been on the pitch for his club.
The Norwegian already has 14 for the season and is aiming to score in the 11th successive game for club and country when Pep Guardiola’s side visit Villarreal on Tuesday.
The Spaniards have made a solid start in La Liga and are third in the table, but they are yet to register a Champions League victory after losing a drab opener against Tottenham 1-0 and picking up a 2-2 draw away to Juventus thanks to a late Renato Veiga equaliser.
Since then they have lost to Real Madrid at the Bernabeu and conceded a late equaliser of their own against Real Betis at the weekend.
Expect the hosts to sit deep and look to hurt Guardiola’s side on the counter-attack. They rank 29th out of the 36 Champions League teams in terms of possession percentage from their two games with 43.1, but have registered the second-most fast-break shots with four.
That approach has been successful against the Citizens in recent seasons and the Premier League team will be without key midfielder Rodri, who continues to struggle for full fitness.
City opened their European campaign with a comfortable 2-0 success against the ten men of Napoli but they were held to a 2-2 draw in Monaco last time out after a controversial late penalty in favour of the hosts, which was converted by Eric Dier.
With the help of Haaland’s goals, City are now unbeaten in their last eight games and seem to have shaken off some of the concerns that dogged them throughout their shaky start to the season.
Nevertheless, they face a tough challenge against a Villarreal side who have lost only one of their last 17 home games.
Goals are almost a given in matches featuring Haaland this season and this one looks set to be no different.
Villarreal’s counter-attacking approach could yield plenty of success, so back both teams to score and over 2.5 goals.
Mikautadze a real threat for hosts
Georges Mikautadze has been a real revelation in Europe in recent years. The Georgian has netted three goals in five starts for Villarreal this term and scored 17 goals in all competitions for Lyon last season.
The 24-year-old is likely to lead the line for the hosts and looks their likeliest route to goal.
