Arsenal vs Atletico Madrid preview

Arsenal are setting a lively pace at the top of the Premier League and they can maintain their faultless start to the Champions League by beating Atletico Madrid at the Emirates on Tuesday.

The opening night of matchday three features three of the six teams on maximum points and, while fifth-placed Arsenal have the benefit of home advantage, third-placed Paris Saint-Germain and fourth-placed Inter face tricky trips to Leverkusen and Union Saint-Gilloise.

Mikel Arteta’s priority will be to secure one of the top eight positions and, while his team are off to a strong start, he will be mindful that they still have to tackle away games against Bayern Munich and Inter on matchdays five and seven.

There should be full focus and concentration from Arteta’s side and that may pave the way for a solid, low-scoring success over Atletico, who are aiming to get back to being a tough team to play against.

Atletico have built a reputation as a well-organised unit, capable of soaking up pressure and making the most of counter-attacks and set-piece opportunities.

They have taken part in a couple of high-scoring Champions League games this season, losing 3-2 at Liverpool and winning 5-1 at home to Leverkusen.

Three points from those matches looks like a reasonable return and Atletico would almost certainly settle for a point against the Gunners, because they have some easier fixtures to come towards the end of their league-phase campaign.

Diego Simeone’s side are off to a mixed start in La Liga with 16 points taken from nine matches, although they secured only their second clean sheet when easing to a 1-0 triumph at home to Osasuna on Saturday.

That stretched their unbeaten sequence to six but it was probably harder work than Simeone might have hoped for against an Osasuna side who are pointless on their league travels.

Atleti faced nine shots from Osasuna and will need to protect their goal a lot better against the Gunners, who have been playing an efficient and ruthless brand of football.

Arteta’s side have not been sweeping teams aside with free-flowing patterns of play, but their defensive strength can be seen in many Premier League metrics with Arsenal posting the lowest figures in terms goals conceded (three), shots faced (65) and xG against (5.9).

While some Gunners fans may be craving a little more offensive flair, the attacking statistics stack up pretty well with the Londoners fourth on xG (15.73) and first for shots (123).

Arsenal have done all this despite having to cope with injuries to key players with Bukayo Saka and William Saliba missing games earlier in the campaign and Martin Odegaard and Noni Madueke among the current injured contingent.

The Gunners have assembled a robust and talented squad capable of competing in multiple competitions and their strong start to the Champions League looks set to continue.

Gabriel can generate a goal threat

Arsenal are one of the most effective teams at set-pieces and Gabriel is one of their main penalty-area targets.

The Brazilian defender has had seven goal attempts in the Premier League, scoring once. Atletico will be aware of the threat but they may struggle to stop Gabriel from registering an effort on target.

Simeone’s side could be shut out

Gunners’ fans were able to sing ‘1-0 to the Arsenal’ after the weekend win at Fulham, but 2-0 has been a more common scoreline for the Londoners in recent times.

Arsenal have won both of their Champions League matches against Athletic Bilbao and Olympiakos  2-0 and there is a good chance of the same outcome against Atletico, who may struggle to get their offensive game going in arguably their toughest assignment of the league phase.

Bukayo Saka to score or assist

Bukayo Saka endured an injury-interrupted opening to the campaign, but he is getting closer to full match sharpness and can come up with a key moment.

Leandro Trossard over 0.5 shots on target

Leandro Trossard has emerged as a key player in recent weeks and he can test the reflexes of visiting goalkeeper Jan Oblak.

Clement Lenglet to be shown a card

The French defender has been carded in four of his last five appearances and could soon be on the wrong side of referee Davide Massa.
