Game Preview: Avalanche Put Perfect Road Record on the Line in Utah

The Avalanche haven’t lost a road game in three tries.

The Utah Mammoth are a perfect 3-0-0 at Delta Center.

One of those streaks ends tonight.

Coming off yet another win at home, the Avs are in Utah looking to go 2-0 against their divisional rival. Colorado defeated the Mammoth 2-1 in its home opener at Ball Arena on Oct. 9

Scott Wedgewood is likely in goal for the Avs yet again, looking to build on a 5-0-1 start. He’s played every game and every minute of the season for Colorado and has been one of, if not the best, goalies in the young season. Mackenzie Blackwood did not make the road trip, meaning Trent Miner is the other option for head coach Jared Bednar.

In their last meeting, the Mammoth outshot the Avalanche 33-27, holding Colorado to just 13 shots in the final two periods.

Wedgewood made 32 saves that night. Nathan MacKinnon scored early in the third period to put the Avs ahead 2-1. It was his first goal of the season.

Colorado will also continue to play without Logan O’Connor, Joel Kiviranta, and Samuel Girard. All of them are still out, although it does sound like Blackwood is the closest to returning.

The lineup will likely remain the same as the one the Avs used on Saturday. Josh Manson and Brent Burns are on the second pair together, with Manson shifting to his off-hand. Ilya Solovyov is on the third pair with Sam Malinski.

For Utah, Nick Schmaltz leads the offense with nine points in six games. He’s been on fire to start the season, playing on the top line with center Barrett Hayton and Clayton Keller.

Karel Vejmelka has won all three of his starts since losing to the Avalanche in his first game. He’s expected to get the nod for the Mammoth.
