Celtic vs Rangers preview

More than 20 years have passed since Martin O’Neill last took charge of Celtic against Rangers and the Bhoys’ interim manager, assisted by Shaun Maloney, will be hoping to roll back the years when his side take on their rivals in the Scottish League Cup semi-final at Hampden Park.

The 73-year-old was a shock appointment following Brendan Rodgers’s resignation in what has been an explosive and dramatic season north of the border as Hearts have opened up a nine-point gap at the top of the table, with both the Hoops and Rangers struggling.

Both Glasgow rivals have seen their managers depart, with Danny Rohl replacing Russell Martin after a disastrous start to the campaign.

The German boss has overseen two routine domestic wins but they were outplayed in his first game in charge, a 3-0 defeat away to Brann.

O’Neill picked up a 4-0 victory over Falkirk in his first match on Wednesday but with both managers so fresh into their positions, it’s hard to think of an Old Firm in recent memory that is harder to weigh up.

Celtic have dominated this competition in recent years, winning seven of the last nine editions, but the Light Blues are unbeaten in the last four head-to-heads.

The Hoops are a shadow of the team that beat Rangers on penalties in the final of this competition last December, with the departures of Nicolas Kuhn and Kyogo Furuhashi being keenly felt.

There were a lack of quality attacking arrivals in the summer and injuries to Alistair Johnston and Cameron Carter-Vickers mean they are weaker at the back as well.

It is therefore hard to be enthusiastic about the quotes of odds-on about a Celtic victory and the safer play may be the draw.

With both teams such an unknown quantity under their new managers and with the stakes as high as they are, it may take more than 90 minutes to separate these great rivals.

Gassama a danger man

Rangers have struggled to find the best make-up of their attacking options but Djeidi Gassama has looked a real threat whenever he has featured for the Light Blues.

The former Sheffield Wednesday man has five goals since his summer arrival and could take advantage of a weakened Celtic backline.

Tight affair could be on the cards

Rangers have already drawn five games 1-1 this season and a repeat of that could be in the offing with both teams likely to keep things tight as they did in the goalless draw between the two earlier in the season.

Celtic vs Rangers Bet Builder

Under 4.5 goals

With both teams looking disjointed this season, expect a cagier clash than usual as it was in the 0-0 draw between the two earlier in the campaign.

Both teams to score

Both teams have scored in five of Rangers’ last seven games and the same looks likely here.

Sebastian Tounekti to score at any time

The winger got his first league goal for Celtic against Falkirk in midweek and is one of their main threats.
