James D. Watson, the American scientist and Nobel laureate whose part in discovering the structure of DNA — the genetic blueprint for life — portended a long and illustrious career but who was professionally ostracized late in life for writings condemned as racist and sexist, died Nov. 6 at a hospice in East Northport, New York.
