Two teams still seeking their first Champions League wins of the season will collide on Wednesday when Bayer Leverkusen travels to face Benfica. Both clubs reside among the bottom seven teams in the standings, but a three-point win in Lisbon could transform the campaign for either competitor.
Benfica holds the overall advantage in its head-to-head against Bayer Leverkusen, having won two of their four meetings to date. The Factory Squad has only won one of those clashes in comparison, although that 2014 fixture also coincided with the Champions League, while both Benfica’s victories occurred in the second-tier Europa League.
Jose Mourinho’s appointment as Benfica boss has yet to yield the European boost the club will have hoped for, though the Eagles have been fairly dominant on the domestic front. Leverkusen has also undergone a mid-season management shift and sits fifth in the Bundesliga under Kasper Hjulmand.
The Dane will be without no fewer than five players in Portugal, including suspended Robert Andrich, as well as injured stars like Lucas Vazquez, Nathan Tella, and Malik Tillman. Bruma and Amar Dedic are Mourinho’s only fitness concerns, though more changes could be en route as The Special One looks to spark his side into life.
