Kelvin and Liz Fletcher are set to welcome a new arrival to their farm in Sunday’s instalment of Fletcher’s Family Farm.
The ITV series chronicles the former Emmerdale actor and his family as they document the ups and downs of managing their Cheshire farm.
In the forthcoming episode, however, Kelvin and Liz not only learn that one of their cows is expecting, but they also bring home a new resident – a cockerel.
The farmer revealed that their four hens “play by their own rules”, prompting Liz and Marnie to search for a cockerel. Liz told their daughter, “Well, you know, we’ve got the four hens, but we’ve never had a cockerel, have we? And if we have a cockerel, when the hens lay their eggs, then they would be fertilised into chicks.”
The pair visited a farm where breeder Emily helped them choose the ideal cockerel for their smallholding, reports the Express.

“When I say the cockerel home to the hens, how will they work out their relationship? Will he just instantly know how to be the boss of them?” Liz asked.
Emily responded, “Yeah, they’ll just chat amongst themselves about ‘Who’s this new guy and what are his intentions?’ Yeah, so I guess they might go through a bit of a dating phase.”
After choosing their cockerel to bring home, Liz shared her thoughts on their decision, “Today’s been amazing. We wanted that traditional cockerel look. You know, he looks like he’s got something about him, and it feels like it’s something that the farm was missing.
“I think Kelvin…you know, two alphas looking at each other. He might square up to the cockerel and be like, ‘Who’s the boss of this farm?’ And he’ll know it’s the cockerel.”

She continued, “This is the next teeny little bit of expansion at the farm, just the next little addition that’s exciting, fun.
“He’s very good-looking. He’s a handsome chap.”
In another part of the episode, the Fletchers discovered that one of their cows was pregnant. However, the mood turned sombre when the vet informed them that their other cow had suffered a miscarriage and had an infection.
Fletcher’s Family Farm will return on Sunday at 11.30am on ITV.
