Thousands of people in Anchorage and Mat-Su were without power Monday morning due to what utilities described as a load-shedding event. Power was restored within about an hour, utilities said.

Roughly 19,000 people were impacted by the outage, according to a 9:47 a.m. social media post from Matanuska Electric Association, which provides power to people from Mat-Su to Eagle River.

Chugach Electric described the outage as a “load shedding event impacting thousands of our customers across the city.”

The utility said such an event occurs when a major source of power goes offline. The source of the load shed wasn’t immediately clear.

Chugach posted an update around 10:15 a.m. saying power was restored. MEA posted a similar update just before 10:45 a.m.

“Early indications are that both Chugach and MEA lost generation causing the cascading outages across our service territories,” Chugach said in its update. “Additional generation resources are being brought on line and we are coordinating power restoration. Thank you for your patience.”
