NBA Hall of Famer Sends Victor Wembanyama MVP Message After Historic Game

San Antonio Spurs center Victor Wembanyama had a historic performance against the Dallas Mavericks on Wednesday, scoring 40 points while recording 15 rebounds and three blocks.

With his performance, Wembanyama became the first player in NBA history to record 40 or more points and 15 or more rebounds on 70 percent shooting with zero turnovers. His 40 points were also the most points scored by a Spurs player in a regular season opener.

Hall of Fame power forward Kevin Garnett took to X (formerly Twitter) to show love to Wembanyama, posting a brief message.

Wembanyama’s 40-point game coupled with strong performances from Stephon Castle and No. 2 overall pick Dylan Harper led the Spurs to a blowout 125-92 win over the Mavericks.

The 7-foot-3 center had high expectations coming into the league, and finally looks ready to rise to them in 2025-26. He unanimously won the Rookie of the Year award in his first season in the league, posting 21.4 points per game while leading the league with 3.6 blocks per game.

His 2024-25 campaign was cut short by a blood clot in his shoulder, however, he still managed to make his first All-Star Game and led the league in blocks per game yet again with 3.8.

Wembanyama’s performance has generated a lot of talk around the league, with many — including teammate Stephon Castle — referring to him as the best player in the NBA.

“I think he is the best player in the league. I expect that from him, no matter who is matched up against him,” Castle said.

The Spurs get a day of rest before heading into a favorable matchup against the New Orleans Pelicans on Friday. Wembanyama has historically performed well against the Pelicans, recording a double-double with three or more blocks in each of his four career appearances against them, and scoring 25 points in his most recent game against them on Dec. 8, 2024. The game begins at 4:00 p.m. PT/7:00 p.m. ET.
