Trump Attacks Democrat Candidates As Election Day Looms

President Donald Trump posted several messages on Truth Social on Sunday evening attacking Democrat candidates ahead of Election Day while his interview on “60 Minutes” aired on CBS.
Why It Matters
Elections on November 4, including a mayoral election in New York and two gubernatorial contests, will by a key a barometer for Trump as his Republican’s as polls show the president’s support waning and as frustration grows with the government shutdown.
Poor showings on Tuesday could spell trouble for Trump and the Republican Party in next year’s midterm elections and give a boost to beleaguered Democrats.
What To Know
One of the most watched of the votes is the one for mayor of New York, where Democratic nominee Zohran Mamdani, 34, is the frontrunner ahead of independent candidate Andrew Cuomo and Republican Curtis Sliwa.
Trump, in a wide-ranging interview at his home in Mar-A-Lago with “60 Minutes,” said if he had to choose between former New York Governor Cuomo – a “bad democrat” – or New York State Assemblyman Mamdani – a “communist” – he would pick the “bad democrat,” according to interview portions that aired on TV.
Trump repeated a threat to cut off federal funding to New York if Mamdani wins.
“It’s going to be hard for me as the president to give a lot of money to New York. Because if you have a Communist running New York, all you’re doing is wasting the money you’re sending there,” he said.
Trump also laid into the Democrats running in major contests in Virginia and New Jersey on his Truth Social page, with three posts over 10 minutes that urged residents in both states – which are electing new governors – to vote Republican, saying a vote for the Democrats is a “DEATH WISH” and will only bring “HEARTACHE.”
“VOTE REPUBLICAN FOR A GREAT AND VERY AFFORDABLE LIFE. All you’ll get from voting Democrat is unrelentingly High Crime, Energy prices through the roof, men playing in women’s sports, and HEARTACHE!” Trump wrote in one post, in part.
According to the latest polls, Democrat Abigail Spanberger leads Republican Winsome Earle-Sears in the final stretch of the race of Virginia’s governor. In New Jersey, the race for governor between Democrat Mikie Sherrill and Republican Jack Ciattarelli has emerged as one of the nation’s closest contests, polls indicate.
Harking back to some of the themes that helped propel Trump into the White House for a second term, he said Sherrill and Spanberger “want transgender for everybody, men playing in women’s sports, High Crime, and the most expensive Energy prices almost anywhere in the World.”
What People Are Saying
President Donald Trump said on Truth Social: “If you vote Republican, your Energy Costs are going to go down, tremendously! If you vote Democrat, your Energy Costs are going to go “through the roof,” making Energy virtually unaffordable for you and your family to pay.”
