Michael McIntyre said, “I wasn’t expecting this,” as the first contestant on Saturday’s episode of The Wheel broke down in tears. The show returned for a sixth series tonight and featured celebrity guests including former Everton and England footballer Jill Scott, comedian Katherine Ryan and former rugby union player Joe Marler.

The first contestant was Hannah, a data analyst from Macclesfield and she revealed a connection with one of the celebrities. She said: “I struggled with mental health for quite a while. I never really had a hobby.” She paused and began to tear up.

Hannah then continued: “I was always kind of a lost kind of person growing up; I didn’t know if I was coming or going. This said person brought out a podcast about mental health and rugby”. She then welled up again.

Michael said: “Hannah, I wasn’t expecting this.” Hannah then said: “I now play rugby; it is a massive passion of mine and if it wasn’t for Joe, then I wouldn’t be doing it.”

Joe, who played for Harlequins and England until his 2024 retirement. He also hosts the podcast Joe Marler’s Things People Do. It was previously known as The Joe Marler Show.

Joe and Hannah then hugged and Michael said, “That’s so sweet.” The game show then began in earnest.
