Drivers across the UK have been issued a warning to make one simple check or risk increasing their annual costs by up to £120.
Tyre pressure checks ahead of the cooler weather are vital, as tyres naturally lose air pressure when temperatures drop from summer to autumn.
The motoring experts Show Plates World explained that low tyre pressure can lead to higher fuel costs, as when tyres are underinflated, the engine has to work harder, using more fuel and wearing the tyres out faster.

For an average UK driver covering around 7,000 miles a year, low tyre pressure can add £30–£40 in fuel costs — and in some cases, over £100.
That’s why autumn is the best time to check your tyres. As temperatures swing from warm to cold, air pressure drops naturally — often without drivers noticing.
Even a 10C fall can reduce pressure by 1–2 psi, making the car use more power and fuel.
A spokesperson for Show Plates World said: “When the temperature drops, tyre pressure falls too. Many drivers don’t realise until their car starts using more fuel.
“A quick weekly check takes only minutes and can save a lot of money over time.”
Show Plates World recommends these simple tips for autumn driving:
Check tyre pressure weekly – Cold weather lowers pressure. Follow the guide inside the driver’s door or fuel cap.
Use a reliable pressure gauge – Garage air machines aren’t always accurate.
Check when tyres are cold – Warm tyres can give false readings.
Watch for uneven wear – It could mean tyres need alignment or balancing.
Lighten the load – Extra weight in the boot makes the car use more fuel.
