“Such a pattern would enhance the prospects of cold conditions if it transpires.”

He was quick to clarify that the method has proven wrong before.

Cathal said: “Now, to reiterate, we’re not saying that we will experience a frigid December with snowfall for everyone, we’re merely highlighting one models theory, which if it were to transpire, could provide us with a more appreciable cold spell than what we have become accustomed to of late.

“It must be said that other models do support the ECMWF also.”

Meanwhile, Met Eireann’s latest forecast shows mixed conditions heading into the weekend.

Thursday

Mostly cloudy today with scattered outbreaks of rain and drizzle, mainly over the western half of the country.

Misty with some fog patches too. Some bright spells will develop further east through the day, but with some scattered showers also.

A mild day with highest temperatures of 12 to 16 degrees with light to moderate southerly winds.

Friday

Friday will be a mostly cloudy day, misty too. It will be a wet start in the southwest with widespread rain, but just scattered showers elsewhere. The rain will slowly spread northeastwards from the southwest through the morning and afternoon.

As it does so, it will become patchier, giving way to drier conditions in the evening with some clear spells following too.

Light to moderate or fresh southeasterly winds will veer westerly as the rain passes. Highest temperatures of 11 to 14 degrees.

Saturday

There remains uncertainty in the forecast detail for Saturday.

Current indications are for a mix of sunny spells and scattered showers, with the best of the sunny spells over the northern half of the country and the showers, some of which may be heavy, most frequent over the southern half.

Cloud will start to build from the southwest in the evening, with a band of rain reaching the southwest by nightfall. Highest temperatures of 11 to 14 degrees, with mostly light to moderate southeasterly winds.
