US politics live: Trump’s wild excuse why Republicans lost

Welcome to our coverage of US politics.
The Democrats have scored decisive victories in a series of elections across the US which were held exactly on year after Donald Trump’s presidential victory.
The party held onto the Governorship of New Jersey and flipped the Governorship of Virginia while voters in California overwhelmingly agreed to redraw the state’s electoral map to more favour Democrats after Texas did the same to bolster Republicans.
The most notable success, however, was in New York City where Zohran Mamdani, who was the official Democrat candidate but labels himself as a “Democratic Socialist,” will be the new mayor.
Even Mr Trump seemed to acknowledge the scale of the losses, saying: “I don’t think it was good for Republicans”.
But he also insisted the failure was because “Trump wasn’t on the ballot” despite him leading the party.
Meanwhile, the Supreme Court has start hearing arguments as to whether Mr Trump’s widespread use of tariffs without Congress’ approval is legal. And they seem sceptical as to the government’s arguments.
And Vladimir Putin has ordered Russia looks into resuming nuclear testing if indeed the US does the same.
Read on for more updates.
