Report: Major champ heavily tipped for 2027 Ryder Cup captaincy to rule himself out of running

Gary Player recently hit headlines when he claimed there was no question that he was the third-best player of all time behind Jack Nicklaus and Tiger Woods.

The South African has never been shy about stating his opinion, and now, in a wide-ranging Q&A with Golf Digest, the 9-time major champion has opened up on a variety of topics related to the game.

Not a fan of the Ryder Cup, Player explained to the publication why he wanted to see the event abolished, saying:

“Yes, I would like to see them abolish it, and I’ll tell you why. Nobody loves golf more than me, but I love golf to such an extent that I sat there and cringed. The whole world was watching and all you heard was ‘F’ this and ‘F’ that and you see people misbehaving.”

And when it came to his own game, the South African stated that he’d have won at least 3 or 4 majors had he lived in the U.S. during his career, saying:

“…If I had lived in America, I would have won at least another three or four majors. Travelling from South Africa with six children, being away from home, living in motels … ”
