Nearly 10 years after Benjamin’s birth, Kelly died on July 12, 2020, following a battle with breast cancer. She was 57.
Since then, John, 71, has vowed to be candid about her passing to his children. As he recalled once telling his son, “‘Ben, you always love the truth and I’m going to tell you the truth about life. Nobody knows when they’re going to go or when they’re going to stay.'”
“‘Your brother left at 16. Too young,'” he continued during a 2021 appearance on Hart to Heart. “Your mother left at 57 and that was too young. But who’s to say?'”
