Nationwide Building Society has issued an update about a £50 bonus payment for millions of customers. The group issued the one-off £50 payment to more than 12 million customers last year, in its Big Nationwide Thank You payment.

The extra cash was Nationwide’s way of saying thank you to its customers following its successful acquisition of Virgin Money. All payments have now been sent out to those who are eligible. The money was either transferred directly into your bank account or sent out as a cheque in the post.

People who received a cheque must cash it in by January 1, 2026, to secure their payment. With the final deadline approaching in less than two months, Nationwide was questioned about what happens if a customer hasn’t banked their cheque by the new year.

A spokesperson said: “All ‘The Big Thank You’ payments have been made to eligible customers, and all cheques have been sent. Customers must pay in cheques by 1 January 2026 to make sure they don’t miss out on the payment.

“Any enquiries from customers who have been unable to deposit their cheque by 1 January 2026 will be considered on a case-by-case basis.” All other payments were transferred into either a current account, an instant access account, or a limited access savings account registered in the eligible person’s name.

Who qualified for the £50 bonus payment from Nationwide Building Society?

To be eligible for the one-off payment, you had to be a Nationwide member on September 30, 2024. You also had to still be a member when the payments were issued.

In the 12 months to the end of September 2024, members also need to either have had:

  • At least one qualifying transaction on your Nationwide current account or savings account, or
  • At least £100 in total in one or more of your Nationwide current accounts and savings accounts, or
  • Owed at least £100 in total on one or more Nationwide residential mortgages.

You were also eligible if you carried out a switch to any Nationwide current account, between July 1 and September 30, 2024, using the Current Account Switch Service.
