Rico Hoey has been chalked up as favourite for the Bermuda Championship, but the 30-year-old PGA Tour maiden badly struggles on the greens and can be left alone at the odds.

Hoey’s crisp ball-striking will stand him in great stead at a windswept Port Royal, but it is difficult to imagine his broomhandle putter behaving enough over 72 holes for the market leader to oblige. Something similar to the 17th place he managed on his Bermuda debut last year appears on the cards.

Top tip

Nico Echavarria 22-1

Cheerful Colombian Nico Echavarria  relishes competing in the wind – he is a master at controlling his ball in a breeze – and this week’s forecast for strong and consistent gusts from the Atlantic Ocean will have him licking his lips.

Echavarria’s maiden PGA Tour title came in the Puerto Rico Open on a windy island in 2023. He was second in the RSM Classic last year at a windswept coastal location, then lost a playoff for the Sony Open in January in breezy Hawaii.

Echavarria, who won the Zozo Championship in Japan just over a year ago, has grown comfortable on the PGA Tour, teeing up in every Major this year, making the cut on his Masters debut. His last two tournaments indicate he is finding his A-game and nobody appears a more likely contender in Bermuda.

Ninth place in the Baycurrent Classic was followed by a closing 63 for 14th place in the World Wide Technology Championship, where he made 12 birdies in the final round, signing off with four in a row. He has arrived at Port Royal with a wet sail.

Echavarria has the accuracy to plot safe passage along a windswept Port Royal and he has become one of the best putters on the PGA Tour, so can handle the large, undulating greens. He has steady Bermuda form figures and is making his fourth start at the track this week.

Next best bet

Pierceson Coody 30-1

PGA Tour success should come for Pierceson Coody sooner rather than later and this week’s low-grade gathering seems an excellent opportunity. He has won three times on the Korn Ferry Tour and the 25-year-old Texan has already wrapped up a PGA Tour card for next season.

Teeing off in the last group in round one of the World Wide Technology Championship last Thursday meant Coody got the worst of the greens and was rushing to get finished before darkness descended on El Cardonal. He struggled to get going over the first two days, but weekend rounds of 67 and 66 hauled him up to 31st place.

Coody’s driving was typically magnificent last week and he finished fifth in the greens in regulation statistics. An unruly putter was the issue and he finished 68th in the putting statistics. Any warming of the flat stick in Bermuda should see Coody contend.

One of his KFT titles came in Panama and Coody enjoys performing in tropical locations. He has also played well in The Bahamas on the KFT and his Bermuda Championship debut last year resulted in four rounds in the 60s for 12th place. He had missed three of his last four cuts prior to that event, but fell in love with Port Royal.

This time he tees up with confidence. He lost a playoff for the ISCO Championship last year, was third in the 3M Open in July and third again in the Bank of Utah Championship at the end of last month.
