When can Eagles clinch NFC East, NFL playoff spot after Raiders win?

PHILADELPHIA − The Eagles did their part in getting closer to clinching the NFC East division title by burying the Raiders 31-0 on Dec. 14.

The Cowboys then gave the Eagles a big assist by losing to the Vikings 34-26 several hours later.

That leaves the Eagles needing just one more victory or one more Cowboys loss in order to win the NFC East for the second straight season, and thus clinch at least one first-round home game in the NFL playoffs.

All of that can happen as soon as Dec. 20 if the Eagles beat the Washington Commanders (4-10) at Northwest Stadium in Landover, Maryland. If the Eagles lose, they can clinch the division the next day with a Cowboys loss to the Los Angeles Chargers (10-4) in Arlington, Texas.

The Eagles are trying to become the first repeat division champions since they last did it in 2004.

The Eagles’ magic number was reduced to one after their win over the Raiders, which ended a three-game losing streak. The Cowboys, meanwhile, lost their second straight game. Each team has three games remaining.

For the Eagles to miss the playoffs, Dallas would have to win all three games while the Eagles lose all three. If the Eagles lose out, they won’t be able to make the playoffs as a wildcard.

NFC East standings

  1. Eagles: 9-5
  2. Cowboys: 6-7-1
  3. Commanders: 4-10
  4. Giants: 2-12

The Giants and Commanders have already been eliminated. That leaves the Cowboys as the only team that can realistically overtake the Eagles.

Eagles’ NFL playoff odds

According to NFL’s NextGen stats, the Eagles currently have an 95% chance of making the playoffs after beating the Raiders. Had they lost to Las Vegas, the Eagles’ chances would have dropped to 80%.

What happens if Eagles clinch NFC East?

By clinching the division, the Eagles will have one of the top four seeds in the NFC playoffs, and will be guaranteed to host a first-round game against one of the three wild-card teams.

Seven teams in each conference make the playoffs. Only the top seed gets a first-round bye. For the first round, the No. 2 seed will host the No. 7 seed, the No. 3 seed will host the No. 6 seed, and the No. 4 seed will host the No. 5 seed.

The Eagles are currently the No. 3 seed in the NFC. If the season ended today, they would host the 49ers (10-4).

The No. 1 seed will have home field advantage for as long as it remains in the playoffs, including the NFC Championship game.

Eagles odds for NFC’s No. 1 seed

According to NFL.com, the Eagles had a 1% chance of getting the No. 1 seed in the NFC playoffs before their win over the Raiders, and that shouldn’t change much after the Rams won to improve to 11-3.

The Eagles hold a tiebreaker over the Rams after beating them 33-26 in Week 3. But the Eagles are two games back with three to go.
