St Mirren vs Celtic preview

St Mirren’s last trophy came when they lifted the Scottish League cup crown in the 2012-13 season and the Buddies will be hoping for more Hampden Park success when they meet defending champions Celtic in Glasgow.

The Hoops have won the competition eight times since the Buddies last tasted success and it’s eight consecutive Scottish League Cup final successes for the Bhoys.

However, it’s difficult to believe that Celtic are arriving at Hampden Park at the peak of their powers and the current Parkhead squad certainly look a long way short of the roster which beat Rangers on penalties after a 3-3 draw in last season’s final.

Wilfried Nancy now sits in the Celtic dugout and the Frenchman’s first game in charge was a 2-1 defeat to title rivals Hearts on home turf.

The Hoops were hammered 3-0 by Roma on European duty in midweek, and while this has rarely been said about a Celtic side, goalscoring looks a huge concern.

Of course, Nancy’s men have the resources to hammer one or two of Scotland’s weakest teams every now and then, but the Bhoys have scored only two goals in their last three matches and all of those games have been on home turf.

St Mirren have faced the champions twice already in the league this term and those matches have ended in 1-0 Celtic victories. The latest of those successes came via a last-gasp Callum McGregor goal and Buddies boss Stephen Robinson has done a good job of frustrating the Hoops.

The Bhoys remain without Jota, Cameron Carter-Vickers, Callum Osmand and Alistair Johnston, while Sebastian Tounekti and Michel-Ange Balikwisha are not certain to feature with the Africa Cup of Nations on the horizon.

There is more quality missing from Celtic and while Nancy’s side may still have too much for St Mirren, under 2.5 goals looks the best Hampden play.

Goalless final not ruled out

Celtic are 4-9 chances to lift the cup in 90 minutes and that short-price is keeping the goal line high. However, with under 2.5 goals looking a big runner a chance can also be taken on no goalscorer at 14-1.

There were only four shots on target when Celtic beat St Mirren 1-0 in Paisley last month and that contest had 0-0 written all over it until McGregor found the net in the 95th minute of the game.
