Windy week with a warmup before Thursday storm

TUESDAY – WEDNESDAY: Winds will gust in the 30 to 40 mph range during Tuesday afternoon. There is a Wind Advisory Tuesday until 6pm as gusts could exceed 45-50 mph. This strong wind will bring a rapid increase in temperatures by the afternoon hours into the upper 30s to upper 40s! We’ve not seen temperatures in the 30s since late November. Some parts of the far southern and western valley may even see 50 degrees! With some sunshine sneaking in, there will likely be some snowmelt throughout the day as well. Watch out for ponding and slushy roads on your travels during the day. Temperatures dropping back into the teens overnight will mean the slushy melt will refreeze making for slick roads and sidewalks Wednesday morning. Temperatures will quickly warm back up into the 30s on Wednesday afternoon. Winds will once again be strong out of the SSE with gusts of 25-20 mph. Our next system approaches our western communities Wednesday afternoon. With temperatures above freezing, Wednesday PM precipitation will fall as rain, but overnight there will be a changeover to snow as temperatures plummet back into the single digits.
FIRST ALERT THURSDAY: Light snow continues through Thursday morning. As the cold front passes through that is bringing in the snow, winds will become very strong out of the NNW. Wind gusts will possibly exceed 50 mph during the morning through late afternoon hours. The combination of falling snow and wind will almost certainly lead to blowing snow and travel impacts with Blizzard-like conditions possible, especially in open areas. Prepare for a tough travel day with blowing snow in addition to fresh snow creating slick conditions and poor visibility. In addition, temperatures will drop rapidly with most seeing single digits to lower teens and wind chills below zero. As far as snow totals, we’ll see generally 1 to 3 inches, with the higher end of that in northern areas. FRIDAY – SUNDAY: Cold air entrenches itself back into the region Friday morning with lows in the teens below zero. There is a chance for some light snow Friday morning. It will be another windy day as well with winds out of the southeast gusting over 30 mph. This warming wind direction will allow for temperatures to reach the teens and low 30s. That warm up is short-lived as we will see falling temperatures Saturday. Morning temperatures will be in the teens, but fall into the single digits by midday. Sunday morning lows fall below zero and only warm into the teens under a partly sunny sky. The good news is that there will be much less wind for Saturday and Sunday compared to the previous several days.
