Authorities in Eindhoven have expanded security measures ahead of Tuesday’s Champions League match between PSV and Napoli, including preventive police searches in parts of the city, Eindhovens Dagblad reported.
The searches are intended to stop anyone carrying fireworks or weapons. From Monday, October 20, at 5 p.m. until Wednesday, October 22, at 3 a.m., police are authorized to search anyone in a designated “safety risk area” covering the stadium surroundings, the city center, all buildings within it, and several access roads.
PSV has also implemented its own security measures around the stadium to ensure the match runs safely. The municipality has classified the game as a “high-risk match.”
The municipality warned that clashes between supporters of both clubs are a concern. “Supporters of Napoli have sought confrontations during previous European matches, using heavy fireworks and violence, and have not complied with police and security staff,” the municipality reported. PSV fans have also engaged in confrontations with authorities and other supporters in the past.
Napoli sold about 1,600 tickets to traveling fans, and about 150 additional Italian supporters are expected to arrive in Eindhoven without tickets; authorities already consider them “high-risk.”
Messages reportedly circulating in PSV fan groups suggest that supporters of other clubs may travel to Eindhoven on Monday to support Napoli. Police confirmed the messages but declined further comment. The municipality noted that potential visits from fans of other Italian clubs could increase the risk of disturbances.
