BERKELEY – The No. 4 California men’s swimming & diving team had a strong showing at the annual Triple Distance Meet against No. 8 Stanford on Friday afternoon at Spieker Aquatics Complex. The Golden Bears won 12 of the 20 events in the unique competition against the Cardinal.
A non-team-scoring meet, the Triple Distance Meet splits swimmers into event groups (butterfly, backstroke, breaststroke, sprint freestyle, distance free and individual medley) and requires swims at three different distances within the event: 50, 100 and 200 yards in the fly, breast, back and sprint free; 200, 500, 1,000 in the distance free; and 100, 200 and 400 in the IM.
Yamato Okadome was the lone Bear to sweep his events after touching first in the 50-yard (23.46), 100-yard (50.89) and 200-yard (1:52.20) breaststroke, while setting a pool record in the 50 and 100 breaststroke.
Nathan Wiffen and Samuel Quarles both fell just shy of sweeping the distance freestyle and butterfly events, respectively. Wiffen secured first-place finishes in the 500-yard freestyle (4:20.15) and 1000-yard freestyle (8:53.62), while placing second in the 200-yard freestyle (1:39.33) behind Humberto Najera (1:37.67). Quarles earned first-place finishes in the 50-yard butterfly (21.12) and 100-yard butterfly (46.58), while taking fourth in the 200-yard butterfly (1:47.28).
Keaton Jones touched first in the 200-yard backstroke (1:40.30) with the fourth-fastest time in the country this season, while placing second in the 50-yard backstroke (22.33) and 100-yard backstroke (47.31). Casper Puggaard clinched the first win of his collegiate career after finishing first in the 100-yard individual medley (1:37.67), while taking second in the 400-yard individual medley (3:46.06) and third in the 200-yard individual medley (1:49.57).
