Pasta Sauce Made, Sold In CT Recalled Due To Health Risk, FDA Says

HARTFORD, CT — Pasta sauces made by a Connecticut company have been recalled “due to a possible health risk identified by the Connecticut Department of Consumer Protection,” according to the federal Food and Drug Administration.

Three types of sauce all made by First and Last Bakery, LLC, of Hartford, are subject to the recall.

The products were distributed through Big Y and “potentially other retailers” in Connecticut and Massachusetts from Sept. 22 to Oct. 28.

The following products were recalled:

  • First and Last Original Marinara Sauce, Tomato & Basil
  • First and Last Original Traditional Pasta Sauce, Meat Flavored
  • First and Last Original Puttanesca Sauce, Mildly Hot & Spicy

Sales and production of the sauce have been paused “to ensure full compliance with all regulatory requirements,” according to the FDA.

No illnesses have been reported.

The products were manufactured without an approved scheduled process. Failure to appropriately process acidified or low-acid canned foods can result in the formation of botulism, the FDA said.

Botulism is a potentially fatal form of food poisoning. The condition includes symptoms such as general weakness, dizziness, double-vision, and trouble with speaking or swallowing.

Difficulty in breathing, weakness of other muscles, abdominal distension, and constipation may also be common symptoms.
