IPG Group and Malaysian Cricket Association announce Southeast Asia’s first professional T20 League

Mumbai: Following the success of the Lanka Premier League (LPL), global sports and league management powerhouse IPG Group, in collaboration with the Malaysian Cricket Association (MCA), has announced the launch of the Malaysia Premier League (MPL)—Southeast Asia’s first professional T20 franchise competition.

The inaugural MPL will take place in Kuala Lumpur from June 7 to 27, 2026, featuring five teams with players from across South Asia, including Indian cricketers. Global cricketing icons, such as legends Brett Lee and Tamim Iqbal, will join in mentor roles, bringing experience and star power to the new league.

Led by Anil Mohan, IPG Group brings its proven expertise in sports marketing, league creation, and franchise management to the MPL. With a strong track record of building successful cricket ecosystems in emerging markets, IPG aims to position Malaysia as the next frontier for franchise cricket, uniting homegrown talent and international stars in a high-energy, entertainment-driven league.

Under the partnership, IPG Group will oversee league management, operations, broadcasting, and marketing, ensuring the MPL meets international standards of professionalism and production quality.

Anil Mohan, Founder and CEO of IPG Group, said, “We are excited to partner with the Malaysian Cricket Association to bring professional franchise cricket to Malaysia. With Indian players joining the league, the inaugural Malaysia T20 is set to capture attention across Asia. Our aim is to combine Malaysia’s cricketing passion with our proven expertise in delivering successful global leagues, ensuring fans witness a dynamic and memorable debut season.”

Malaysia’s rising presence in world cricket sets the stage for this landmark venture. The national team’s top finish in the ICC T20 World Cup 2024 Asian Qualifiers and its global ranking of 25 out of 123 nations reflect its upward trajectory. The MPL aims to leverage this momentum, providing opportunities for local talent while expanding the sport’s reach across South and Southeast Asia.

Speaking on the announcement, Mahinda Vallipuram, President of the Malaysian Cricket Association, said, “I am delighted to share the dates of the inaugural season of Malaysia T20. With our understanding and ability to run successful leagues worldwide, we will make sure that cricket fans in Malaysia get to enjoy some dazzling cricketing action. We are equally excited about this challenge to work alongside an associate nation and support them in their journey towards excellence.”

Further details on team identities, player draft processes, marquee signings, and the complete match schedule will be revealed in the coming weeks. Fans can look forward to a spectacular showcase of cricketing talent that promises to put Malaysia firmly on the global cricketing map.
