Pierce Brosnan is best known for his iconic role as James Bond in GoldenEye, Tomorrow Never Dies, The World Is Not Enough, and Die Another Day.

But before he was 007, he starred in a since-forgotten 1992 science fiction horror film, The Lawnmower Man, that used groundbreaking special effects and was met with several lawsuits from horror writer Stephen King, who penned a short story by the same name.

While The Lawnmower Man certainly did not age well three decades later, it is the perfect movie to watch if you crave a bonkers so-bad-it’s-good story with ’90s computer graphics and peak-sexy Pierce Brosnan as a mad scientist.

The Lawnmower Man, which holds an abysmal 35% critics’ rating on the review aggregate website Rotten Tomatoes, was directed and co-written by Brett Leonard, with producer Gimel Everett also serving as co-writer.

The film is loosely based on a Stephen King short story of the same name, though the prolific writer did not approve of the adaptation and sued the filmmakers multiple times over the use of his name.

King first filed a lawsuit in 1992 to have his name removed from the film, which was supposed to be titled ‘Stephen King’s The Lawnmower Man.’ The author argued that the movie “bore no meaningful resemblance” to the original story. Despite successfully suing New Line Cinema, the production company was found to be in contempt of court in 1994 when the home video version kept King’s name in the title.

The Lawnmower Man stars Jeff Fahey as Jobe Smith, an intellectually disabled grass cutter, and Pierce as Dr. Lawrence ‘Larry’ Angelo, a scientist who performs experiments on Jobe using virtual reality technology and nootropic drugs in an effort to make him smarter. While elements of the plot are problematic and did not age well, The Lawnmower Man was ahead of its time in its critique of artificial intelligence and virtual reality.

While the movie isn’t necessarily good, it has developed a cult following for its primitive yet groundbreaking computer graphics and, of course, Pierce Brosnan’s noted good looks.

One fan of the bizarre film starring the Irish-born actor wrote on social media, “I can almost guarantee Pierce Brosnan as the world’s most ruggedly attractive virtual reality researcher was personally responsible for countless sexual awakenings.”

Others chimed in with comments like, “Watching The Lawnmower Man and.. well.. Pierce Brosnan” and “Pierce Brosnan in The Lawnmower Man is peak hotness.”

“The Lawnmower Man was Pierce Brosnan’s greatest role,” one fan went as far as to say. “Been a while since a movie completely FLOORED me, jaw was on the floor the entire time it might be the craziest movie I’ve ever seen,” another one wrote.

The Lawnmower Man is currently available to stream on Tubi.
