East Sussex railway station to close for bonfire events

To ensure people’s safety on 15th November, Rye Station will close as the Rye Bonfire takes place.

The station will be closed from 3 pm, with services resuming on Sunday morning, which has been done in previous years.

This is an effort to prevent anti-social behaviour during the event, and due to the number of people expected to visit the event, Southern has stated that they would not be able to accommodate everyone’s travel needs.

This could risk leaving people stranded due to being unable to board the last trains.

Those wishing to attend a bonfire event should do so in their local area, rather than travelling, to help avoid being overcrowded.

Passengers are also reminded that Lewes, Glynde, Southease, Falmer, and Cooksbridge stations will also be closed from 5 pm on the 5th of November to help keep the events safe.

“For reasons of public safety, Rye railway station will be closed from 3pm on the day of the town bonfire celebrations, which this year falls on Saturday, 15 November.

“We’ve worked closely with community organisers and members of the local multi-agency Safety Advisory Group to help us reach this decision.

“Trains will run through Rye without stopping until the normal start of service next day, Sunday 16 November, and online journey planners such as nationalrail.co.uk have been updated with this revised timetable. Please do consider your alternatives if you’re planning to travel that day.”
