Teenage cricketer fighting for life in hospital after being injured at training

A young cricketer is fighting for his life in hospital after suffering traumatic injuries at training in Melbourne yesterday.
Paramedics were called to Wally Tew Reserve in Ferntree Gully in Melbourne’s outer-east about 4.45pm.
It is believed the player, a 17-year-old boy, had been batting in the nets when he was hit in the head and neck area by a ball bowled from an automatic machine.

He was taken in a critical condition to Monash Medical Centre in Clayton, where he remained on life support tonight.
His family, including his parents and brothers, are holding a vigil by his side in hospital.
Flowers were left by the nets following the incident.
The teenager, who turned 17 a few weeks ago, is believed to be a promising young cricket player who has won several awards at Ferntree Gully Cricket Club.

Ringwood and District Cricket Association chair Michael Finn said he was aware of the incident and that his thoughts are with the player and his family.
Cricket Australia and Cricket Victoria have been contacted for comment.
It’s understood support is being offered to those in need.
