Saracens appear to have moved into pole position to sign Wales captain Jac Morgan when his contract with the Welsh Rugby Union runs out at the end of the season.
Swansea-born Morgan, 25, met with Saracens officials on Wednesday, less than 24 hours after he was named as skipper for the four autumn internationals that start with the visit of Argentina on 9 November.
It was revealed at a meeting of Ospreys fans last month that he has already informed the WRU that he will leave Wales if the Ospreys are one of the two clubs that the governing body will controversially cut.
“Jac has got a hell of a lot of integrity. He hasn’t said that to me officially [about the Ospreys], but if he has, that shows just how much he loves the Ospreys and his teammates. He’s got to be commended for that if he’s said it.
“Welsh rugby and the Ospreys would love to have Jac in this team for many years. The team would be better for it,” Ospreys head coach Mark Jones told the BBC.
Morgan, who has won 24 Wales caps, can play anywhere in the back row and has made 50 appearances for the Ospreys since 2021 after starting his career with the Scarlets.
He has not played a game yet this season since returning from the Lions tour of Australia, where he was the only Welsh player to feature in the Test match series win after picking up a knock during training.
Morgan, who was named Wales’ men’s player of the year last week, attracted interest from the Premiership and France before signing his extension in January, and has once again been exploring his options.
RugbyPass reported in August that his CV was being circulated among clubs across the English Channel, but Saracens, who need to replace Bordeaux-bound England star Tom Willis, are now the favourites to secure his signature.
