Former Emmerdale star Kelvin Fletcher and his wife Liz are returning to our screens, despite a devastating fire on their property.

Kelvin, 41, is opening the doors to his farm for a third series, confidently declaring to the cameras that he now feels like a genuine farmer. “This is my version of a happy life, we’ve found our purpose now,” he shares to The Mirror.

Joining Kelvin in the fourth year of Fletcher’s Family Farm are his wife Liz and their four children – Marnie, Milo and twins Mateusz and Maximus. “I’d even go as far to say the kids are farmers,” Liz comments.

The family’s Peak District farm, tucked away in Cheshire, is busier than ever. Lambing season is in full swing, with even the twins pitching in.

“It’s our fourth year lambing,” Kelvin reveals. “We’re well and truly in our groove. The lambs are flying out at the moment which is great. We’re not having to get involved at all. It’s exactly what you want.”, reports the Mirror.

But it’s not just lambs joining the fold this season. For the first time, the Fletchers are welcoming a breeding bull to expand their herd, following the success of their prize cow, Cherry, who was crowned Supreme Champion at the Royal Cheshire Show.

“We’ve never had a male come on the farm to serve before. I’m excited,” Kelvin admits, “The cows were way more excited than him.”

The arrival of the bull holds special significance for Kelvin. He chose to call him Crowther as a tribute to his late best mate, Steven Crowther. “He’s named after my best mate who sadly passed away,” Kelvin explains.

“Every time I look at Crowther, I think of my mate. Some of my best memories were with him by my side. If Crowther was going to be an animal, he’d be a bull.”

Kelvin also shared the heartfelt gesture with his late friend’s parents. “I took a picture and sent it to his mum and dad. They were delighted,” Kelvin reveals.

Yet amongst the celebrations came a catastrophic blow. Whilst on a rare family getaway, their farmhouse went up in flames.

“We took the whole family away and a few days in, we got a call saying the house was on fire,” Liz recalls.

“Our first reaction was ‘thank god we weren’t here.'” The blaze ripped through the roof of their cherished home they’d invested years renovating. Making things even worse – the substantial smoke damage has left the property uninhabitable for the family.

“It was the stuff of nightmares,” Kelvin explains, “Our neighbour called us. She was in a panic and the fire was roaring.”

Yet they were powerless to act. “The fire brigade was called. It was surreal. We were in another country, there was nothing we could do,” Kelvin recalls.

Nevertheless, the Fletchers remain upbeat as they survey the burnt remnants of their possessions at Fletchers’ Family Farm. “We just have to clean up and tidy up,” Kelvin remarks with a grin.

“One thing I love is a rebound,” Liz quips, “My ironing board’s gone. Luckily, I never did any ironing.”

The Fletchers aren’t solely concentrating on animals this year. Kelvin has his sights set on reviving the farm’s heritage as a diversified enterprise.

“This farm was, once upon a time, a mixed farm,” Kelvin explains, “It did livestock but it grew crops as well from barley, oats, potatoes. However, for the last 20 years, it’s been pure livestock.”

Currently, the family are embarking on a fresh endeavour – cultivating their own oats. “We’re going to grow some oats and hopefully, in six, nine months from now we’ll be sitting at our breakfast table eating our own oats,” Kelvin explains.

The initiative begins with Kelvin tilling his inaugural oat field using over four tonnes of specialist machinery.

However, Liz remained sceptical. “This is definitely Kelvin’s idea and I said I didn’t think it was possible,” Liz reveals.

“We have a lot of things against us. But he was determined we were going to make oats. It’s such a different venture to us.”

Their eldest daughter Marnie, now eight, is also embracing her agricultural role. Enthusiastic about livestock, she’s nurturing her own flock of Jacob lambs and mastering the fundamentals of shepherding from her father.

Fletchers’ Family Farm returns to ITV on Sunday, October 19.
