West Ham vs Newcastle preview
The Premier League table makes bleak reading for West Ham and the Hammers’ early-season woes may continue with an eighth defeat in ten against Newcastle.
Nuno Espirito Santo’s arrival was supposed to steady the ship and install some fresh belief but it has been the same old West Ham with his opening four games yielding just one point.
That came in a 1-1 draw at Everton in his first match in charge and since then there have been few signs of life for the Hammers, who have fallen to 2-0 defeats against Arsenal and Brentford before last weekend’s 2-1 loss at Leeds.
There has been no such thing as home advantage for the Irons, who have lost all four league matches at the London Stadium, conceding 12 goals and scoring only twice.
Chances have been at a premium and they have frequently caved once behind, something not helped by a toxic atmosphere at the London Stadium with supporters understandably angry with the way the club is being run.
Those frustrations have been felt on the pitch and, with too many passengers and not enough up for the fight, Newcastle should be confident of heaping more misery on their hosts.
The Magpies still seek a first away league win of the campaign but goalless draws at Aston Villa, Leeds and Bournemouth show their defensive steel and Wednesday’s 2-0 victory at home to Tottenham in the EFL Cup was their fifth success in six.
Eddie Howe now has the luxury of calling upon a near full-strength squad and it is paying dividends, something which should see them sail past the hapless Hammers who have been prone to throwing in the towel once behind.
Woltemade could make hay
While some players struggle to adapt to life in the Premier League from the Bundesliga, Nick Woltemade has made a seamless transition with his opening 11 appearances in Black and White featuring six goals.
Standing at 6ft 6in, the German carries an obvious aerial threat and that is a particular weakness that could be exploited against the Hammers, who have conceded nine goals from corners this season.
Magpies a tough nut to crack
West Ham have failed to score in four of their seven league defeats this season and they could struggle to breach Newcastle, who have kept eight clean sheets in 14 games.
The Magpies have four shutouts in five away games and may edge to a 2-0 victory, with two of the Hammers’ last three defeats ending that way.
West Ham vs Newcastle Bet Builder
Newcastle to win
West Ham have lost all four home league games this season and things could turn toxic at the London Stadium if Newcastle were to take the lead.
Nick Woltemade anytime goalscorer
The giant German has six goals in 11 appearances since arriving at Newcastle and the Hammers remain vulnerable aerially.
Lucas Paqueta to be shown a card
The Brazilian has picked up three bookings in his last five Premier League appearances and Newcastle’s midfield trio will know just how to frustrate him.
