New Zealand vs England third T20 preview

England battered their way to a stadium-record total of 236-4 in their second T20I against New Zealand and runs look set to flow once more when the pair face off in the final T20 at Eden Park in Auckland early on Thursday morning.

Sam Curran had bemoaned the dimensions of the Hagley Oval before that second game, which England won by 65 runs. “The boundaries are way back, a couple of balls you smack and it goes nowhere,” he said.

But despite their complaints, the visitors were clever as they manipulated the field, running 16 twos in their insurmountable total.

Harry Brook’s men still cleared the boundary rope ten times in that match, five courtesy of the captain himself, but conditions in Auckland should be even more inviting.

Eden Park is known for its short boundaries, particularly straight down the ground, and both teams could make hay as a result.

England’s batting line-up contains depth that most teams could only dream of. Jordan Cox, who top-scored in The Hundred this season, is batting as low as seven to accommodate the other big hitters.

This is a team who posted a T20 total of 304-2 less than six weeks ago and with New Zealand sporting some big hitters of their own, expect the match run total of 366.5 to be smashed.

One player who will be looking to prevent that is the hosts’ Jacob Duffy, who has taken a pair of wickets in the first two England innings of this series.

The quick has 32 T20 wickets in the last 12 months, nearly twice as many as the next New Zealand bowler, at an average of 14.75 and he can extract whatever life there is in this Eden Park pitch.

New Zealand vs England third T20 team news and predicted line-ups

New Zealand

Despite their defeat last time out, the hosts may keep things the same. All-rounder Zakary Foulkes is likeliest to come in.

Predicted line-up: 1 Tim Seifert (wk), 2 Tim Robinson, 3 Rachin Ravindra, 4 Mark Chapman, 5 Daryl Mitchell, 6 Michael Bracewell, 7 Jimmy Neesham, 8 Mitchell Santner (c), 9 Kyle Jamieson, 10 Matt Henry, 11 Jacob Duffy

England

Zak Crawley will be pushing to play his first T20 but the success of England’s batting lineup in the second game means that he may not get an opportunity. The short boundaries could mean the visitors steer clear of playing two spinners and could bring in Jamie Overton.

Predicted line-up: 1 Phil Salt, 2 Jos Buttler (wk), 3 Jacob Bethell, 4 Harry Brook (c), 5 Tom Banton, 6 Sam Curran, 7 Jordan Cox, 8 Jamie Overton, 9 Brydon Carse, 10 Adil Rashid, 11 Luke Wood.
