Hurricane Melissa Approaching Cuba as Category 3 Storm

Hurricane Melissa’s track as of Wednesday morning (National Hurricane Center)

As word gets out about the damage caused in Jamaica by Hurricane Melissa worried family members in this province are anxious to hear from loved ones on the Caribbean island.

The eye of the storm passed over the island yesterday, packing winds with speeds of up to 200 miles per hour in the eye wall, powerful storm surge and heavy rain.

Melissa has since weakened to a Category 3 storm and is headed toward Cuba where over 700,000 have been evacuated.

Kayla and Mark Coady are in Jamaica on their honeymoon and had to seek out shelter to weather the storm. As of last evening, they were safe despite reports of widespread destruction. They asked for prayers for the people of Jamaica and for themselves.

So far, at least seven people are dead in what forecasters are calling one of the strongest hurricanes on record.

Melissa is expected to stay offshore, however parts of Atlantic Canada are expected to see rain and high winds on Friday as the storm passes by.
