Bruno Marchand re-elected Quebec City mayor, CBC News projects

Bruno Marchand has been re-elected mayor of Quebec City under his party Québec Forte et Fière, CBC News projects. This marks his second term as mayor.

He took the stage Sunday night at the Hôtel Château Laurier, giving a thumbs up to the crowd and saying it is with great humility and hope that he welcomes these results.

“The confidence you’re bestowing unto me — it’s rare, it’s precious,” he said.

He says this outcome is the result of the work of thousands of volunteers in his campaign.

In 2021, he was elected by just 739 votes ahead of candidate Marie-Josée Savard.

At the time, Marchand was relatively new to municipal politics and his win was a surprising turn of events.

A poll in September suggested the principal concerns in the provincial capital ahead of the municipal election included housing, homelessness and transportation issues.

Transit has been a key topic for Marchand, even throughout his first term, which saw an agreement reached for the construction of the Quebec City tramway.

The tramway was part of an initial project unveiled in 2018 under Régis Labeaume’s administration, with the idea that the plan could take up to 12,500 cars off the road every day.

Several of the other mayoral candidates — notably Sam Hamad and Stéphane Lachance — were against the project and vowed to pull back from the plan in favour of other transit solutions.

Another former federal MP, Steven Blaney, was elected as Lévis’s new mayor, CBC News projects.

He became emotional when he took the stage Sunday night at a gathering with his supporters and thanked his family and team. He also saluted the work of outgoing longtime mayor Gilles Lehouillier, who was leader of the party Lévis Force 10.

When he stepped back and decided not to run again, Lehouillier opened the race up to three candidates.
