A fight at a party led to shootout that hurt four, Charlottesville Police chief says

CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. (WVIR) – Charlottesville Police are investigating an overnight shooting that left four people injured, including the suspected gunman.

Police say it happened just after midnight Friday at a business on River Road. Multiple 911 calls reported gunfire inside the building, and officers arrived to find several people hurt.

Chief Michael Kochis said an officer nearby responded within moments.

“There was an officer in the area right there on that block that heard the shots being fired and immediately went to the scene and began rendering aid,” Kochis said.

Officers provided lifesaving care, using tourniquets and trauma kits to help stabilize the victims before they were taken to UVA Medical Center. All four were expected to survive.

“Multiple gunshot wounds on multiple individuals — when our officers arrived, they immediately triaged who were the most seriously injured,” Kochis said. “One of them was really seriously injured, and we were able to apply tourniquets and other lifesaving measures and get them the help they needed.”

Investigators identified a suspect as 20-year-old Juan Gavin Castillo of Greene County. He was also shot during the incident and remained in stable condition. Castillo is facing six felony charges, including malicious wounding.

“What happened last night obviously was isolated to that specific location,” Kochis said. “It just happened to be a party where people were there having a good time, and then some type of altercation occurred between some individuals and they had firearms.”

By Saturday morning, evidence of the shooting was still visible at the scene — a man associated with the business was seen cleaning blood from the pavement.

Chief Kochis said the department continues to investigate what led to the gunfire and emphasized that alcohol and guns “never mix.”

Police are asking anyone with information about the shooting to contact the Charlottesville Police Department.
