Wrexham vs Cardiff preview

It is 21 years since Wrexham and Cardiff last met and the pair have had sharply contrasting fortunes since that meeting in the FAW Premier Cup semi-final, which the Red Dragons won on penalties.

The Bluebirds spent two seasons in the Premier League and reached the finals of the FA Cup and EFL Cup while Wrexham were languishing in non-league.

However, the American takeover of the Red Dragons in 2020 has transformed their fortunes and they have risen all the way to the Championship.

Cardiff’s recent history has been less positive. Their last stint in the top flight was six years ago and they were relegated to League One last season under unpopular owner Vincent Tan.

Wrexham’s promotion and Cardiff’s relegation meant that it looked as though the two teams would pass like ships in the night but the EFL Cup draw has ensured that the pair will lock horns for the first time since 2004.

Despite losing 1-0 to promotion rivals Bolton at the weekend, the visitors remain top of the third tier while the home side have battled their way to a solid mid-table position in the Championship.

Wrexham have struggled defensively however and could be breached in this clash.

Phil Parkinson’s side have kept only three clean sheets in their 15 games this season and their weekend draw with Middlesbrough was the fourth game in their last six to finish 1-1

Their big spending and deep squad has come in handy as the Red Dragons are experiencing an injury crisis at present.

Cardiff have lost three of their last five matches and the relatively inexperienced Brian Barry-Murphy is facing his first major challenge as Bluebirds boss.

Expect both clubs to field strong sides in the first chapter of this rivalry for some time, particularly with a quarter-final spot on the line.

Cardiff have kept just one clean sheet in their last eight games and with both sides struggling at the back, both teams to score looks a solid pick in this cup clash.

O’Brien a card candidate

Lewis O’Brien has always struggled with his discipline and that has been the case again at new club Wrexham, where he has picked up four cautions in ten league starts.

Thrilling draw a big runner

Wrexham have drawn four of their last six games and Cardiff should put up a real fight, 90 minutes may not be enough to separate these two teams and a 2-2 draw looks a lively correct score pick.

Both teams to receive a card

Referee Gavin Ward could be busy in this cup game and has booked a player from both teams in nine of his last 11 games in charge.

Rubin Colwill to score or assist

Rubin Colwill has been crucial to Cardiff’s attacking output this season with four goals and five assists. He could well add to that tally against a leaky Wrexham backline.

Yousef Salech to have three or more shots

Yousef Salech is averaging 4.10 shots per 90 minutes in League One this season and is fancied to have at least three attempts in this cup game.
