Texas college football rankings: No. 1 Aggies are state’s last unbeaten team

Texas A&M has a great offense with quarterback Marcel Reed and figures to be ranked in the top three in the next AP poll. They’ve been No. 1 with us for quite some time.

This week’s rankings of the 13 FBS teams in Texas:

1. Texas A&M (7-0) | Last week: 1

The last time the Aggies were 7-0 was way back in 1994 — you know, the Southwest Conference. R.C. Slocum’s team finished 10-0-1 but didn’t get to play in a bowl because of the pesky NCAA and penalizing the school because players like running back Greg Hill received money for work they didn’t do. No such problems in the NIL world. A&M is the SEC’s only unbeaten team after beating Arkansas as it heads to LSU next week.

2. Texas Tech (6-1) | Last week: 2

The Red Raiders discovered why the Big 12 title runs through Tempe, Ariz., as Arizona State quarterback Sam Leavitt passed for 61 yards during a 75-yard scoring drive in the final two minutes for a 26-22 win after the Red Raiders had rallied behind Will Hammond, who was starting for injured Behren Morton.

3. Houston (6-1) | Last week: 3

If we were to call in to Willie Fritz’s radio show, we’d offer nothing but praise. The Cougars knocked off Arizona to reach bowl eligibility for the first time since 2022 but they may not want to stop there. A bigger test awaits next weekend in Tempe, Ariz.

4. Texas (5-2) | Last week: 4

If we were ranking based on defense and special teams, the Longhorns might be No. 1. That it took a goal-line stand, two long punt returns and three field goals to win at Kentucky will raise more questions about Steve Sarkisian’s offense.

5. North Texas (6-1) | Last week: 5

Eric Morris has replaced UTSA’s Jeff Traylor as the hot coaching name from the conference after a 55-17 win over UTSA. The Mean Green is off to a 6-1 start for first time since 2018.

6. TCU (5-2) | Last week: 6

“It wasn’t pretty, but I don’t really care. Our players know how to win.” That could be Steve Sarkisian, but instead it was TCU’s Sonny Dykes after 42-36 win over Baylor. We don’t remember what he said after last week’s loss at Kansas State.

7. SMU (5-2) | Last week: 8

“Our quarterback is a stud.” That was SMU coach Rhett Lashlee on Kevin Jennings, who passed for 290 yards and two touchdons in a 35-24 win over Clemson. We agree.

8. Baylor (4-3) | Last week: 7

The Bears are nothing, if not exciting. After falling behing TCU 42-21, they returned a fumble for a TD, passed for another and recovered an onside kick with 30 seconds left. But Sawyer Robertson was interecepted with 13 seconds left and the Bears fell 42-36. Baylor is now 2-2 in game’s decided in final minute.

9. Texas State (3-4) | Last week: 9

The Bobcats have lost three one-score games in a row after falling 40-37 in double overtime at Marshall. At least the Pac-12 awaits.

10. UTSA (3-4) | Last week: 10

We thought Jeff Traylor’s team was back on track after the 61-13 win over Rice last week. We were wrong. After a 55-17 loss to North Texas, finding three more wins to be bowl eligible is getting harder. After an off week, it’s Tulane (6-1) and South Florida (5-1).

11. Rice (3-4) | Last week: 11

Perhaps a week off is what Scott Abell’s team needed after the big loss to UTSA. UConn comes to Rice Stadium on Saturday.

12. UTEP (2-5) | Last week: 12

Skyler Locklear has established himself as the Miners’ QB1 after throwing for two touchdowns and running for two more in the 35-17 win over Sam Houston.

13. Sam Houston (0-7) | Last week: 13

The Bearkats really miss Bowers Stadium. Wednesday’s loss at Shell Energy Stadium in Houston to UTEP leaves Sam Houston winless through seven for second time in three seasons. The Bearkats were 0-8 to start 2023.
