Letter: Fear and denial

I found Bruce Botelho’s commentary (“Tonic immobility: How American democracy can resist it”) brilliant. He’s done us all a favor by succinctly describing (and giving a name to) the baffling lack of reaction to Trump’s callous disregard for tradition, law, our Constitution, independent judiciary, free speech, the boundary between federal and states’ rights, welfare of our citizens, health care, international relations, economic realities, the government inefficiencies that he’s creating, and so on. The man is like the proverbial bull in a china closet, but most Republicans seem disinclined to rein him in.
I think Bruce’s commentary helps answer the obvious question: Why is there no serious response from those who have been given the power and responsibility to protect us all from such tyranny? Now perhaps we can use the insight Bruce has provided to motivate us to a more unified resistance, as well as maintain steady pressure on our public servants who are in fear and denial.
