CNN Host Abby Phillip Says Network Leans ‘Center-Left’ In ‘Breakfast Club’ Chat

Scott Jennings Challenges CNN’s Abby Phillip In Debate On “War On Criminals”

CNN host Abby Phillip made a candid admission on the popular radio show “The Breakfast Club” on Tuesday, acknowledging that her network leans left, placing its political orientation somewhere between its main cable news competitors, Fox News and MSNBC.

The discussion, prompted by co-host Charlamagne Tha God’s assertion that CNN’s left-leaning bent is a “fact” and not just a “perception,” led Phillip to offer a nuanced assessment of the network’s position.

“I would say it’s fair to say that CNN — we’re not Fox News, but we’re also not MSNBC,” Phillip said. “We’re probably center-left. And I think that has a lot to do with our audience.”

Navigating the Political Spectrum

The host’s comments align with data indicating a sharp partisan split in how the network is viewed. A March 2025 Pew Research Center survey found that while 58% of Democrats trust CNN, the same percentage of Republicans actively distrust the network. This divide comes as overall public trust in media plummets, with a recent Gallup survey showing Republican trust in the media sinking to a historic low of 8%.

Despite the “center-left” description, Phillip was quick to defend CNN’s commitment to presenting a range of views.

“When you actually watch CNN, we have Republicans on every hour of the day, every single one… we as a network have a diversity of viewpoints on the air more so than our competitors,” she argued.

Ultimately, Phillip dismissed the “liberal media” label as an oversimplification, suggesting that CNN is merely a reflection of its audience and is not as extreme as other outlets.

“I don’t put that much stock in it,” she concluded. “I think it’s a little bit a reflection of the cable news audience, but I also think that there are extremes on both sides. And we’re not in the extremes.”
