Wednesday’s Championship predictions

Injury-hit Portsmouth have taken a single point from their last four Championship games but they can stop the rot with a home win over Wrexham.

There are usually fine lines between success and failure in the Championship, but Portsmouth could have no complaints after Saturday’s 4-0 humbling away to Birmingham.

John Mousinho’s men were bossed by the Blues, who hit the front inside the first six minutes and were out of sight after an hour.

However, there were mitigating factors for Pompey’s timid showing in the West Midlands. Influential winger Josh Murphy was deemed fit enough for only a substitute’s role while key defender Connor Ogilvie missed out due to illness.

Both are likely to start against Wrexham on Wednesday and they can play their part in securing Portsmouth’s fourth league win of the season.

Wrexham will be on a high after beating league leaders Coventry 3-2 on Friday night, but the Red Dragons are without a win in three on their travels.

Pompey fans are probably taking some solace from seeing their club perched one point above bitter rivals Southampton, who are on the lookout for a new manager.

Struggling Saints won just two of 13 games under former boss Will Still, who was axed in the wake of Saturday’s 2-0 reverse at home to Preston.

Former Saints boss Ralph Hasenhuttl and Michael Carrick have been mentioned as candidates to take over at St Mary’s but for the time being it is 32-year-old Tonda Eckert who must attempt to steady the ship.

Eckert, who has stepped from his role with the club’s Under-21s, inherits a squad full of talent and he may come up with a winning formula against QPR, who are going through a difficult patch.

The Hoops lost 4-1 at home to Ipswich on Saturday and may be found wanting by another of the sides relegated from the Premier League last season.
