India lost the first ODI and were desperate for a comeback in the second game to keep their hopes alive in the series. If they lose the ongoing, the final ODI in Sydney would have been a dead rubber. As the Indian batters stood up effectively on this occasion, the bowlers also kept it tight against the explosive Aussie top order.

Matt Renshaw, the debutant from the Perth ODI, arrived in Adelaide with some hope of getting some valuable runs, which can propel his team to a victory and earn him a permanent place in the XI. Renshaw was part of a half-century partnership alongside Matt Short.

Having scored a run-a-ball 30, Renshaw looked good in this outing; however, only till Axar Patel was introduced into the attack. Patel lowered his pace and bowled a looped delivery on the off-stump line; Renshaw skipped out to shuffle it over leg, but the ball slid past his outside edge to rattle the middle and leg stumps.
