Halloween weather in Austin: Here’s a temperature timeline for trick-or-treaters

Happy Halloweekend, Austin: That means we can fully enjoy the parties, events, and trick-or-treating without worrying about work or school the next morning. You might want to stock up on a little extra candy, too — with no early bedtimes and the gorgeous, seasonal weather, those costumed kiddos may be out a bit later than usual.

We’ll begin Halloween Day with clear skies and chilly morning temperatures in the 30s and 40s across most of the region, which is about 10 to 12 degrees cooler than normal. By Friday afternoon, expect lots of sunshine, light south winds and temperatures warming into the mid-70s.

No weather tricks, just a treat from Mother Nature for the trick-or-treaters on Friday night — we won’t be sweating it out or needing to cover up costumes with raincoats — the weather won’t be ghoulish at all.

By the time the kiddos hit the streets to collect candy from house to house around 6 p.m., temperatures will be in the low 70s with mostly sunny skies and light southeast winds between 3 and 6 mph. Once the sun sets at 6:44 p.m., temperatures will dip into the mid-60s by 8 p.m., and by 10 p.m., as the candy canvassing wraps up, readings will fall into the upper 50s to near 60 degrees.

Compared to past Halloweens in Austin, this year’s weather looks near perfect! The hottest Halloween on record was in 1997 and 2003, when the temperature soared in both years to a balmy 90 degrees.

The coldest was in 1993, when the thermometer bottomed out at 30 degrees and this was the only year below freezing. It came close in 2019 when the thermometer bottomed out at 34 degrees.

The wettest was 125 years ago, when 2.8 inches of rain fell in Austin on Oct. 31, 1900.
