Look Ahead: Texas A&M Basketball Faces Off Against Texas Southern

Texas A&M Basketball enters its second game of the season tonight against Texas Southern. The Aggies enter the contest 1-0 on the season after a 98-68 beatdown of Northwestern State on Monday night. Texas Southern will enter the contest 0-1 after a 55-point blowout loss to Gonzaga on the same night.

The Aggies potential star transfer, Mackenzie Mgbako, will be out again tonight. With a team full of newcomers, the Aggies will have another opportunity tonight to get plenty of different players significant minutes and gauge what the best lineups may be ahead of their first P4 game against Oklahoma State on Sunday in Stillwater.

In their first game on Monday night, the Aggies had 12 total players record points, with 5 of them in double figures, led by Spanish Guard Ruben Dominguez with 18 points. We saw some stuff out on that floore that makes the potential of this team seems almost unlimited.

Some players I would be on the lookout for to step up tonight and in future games would be star transfer Guard Pop Isaacs as well as Texas Tech transfer Forward Federiko Federiko, who both put up 8 points on Monday night against Northwestern State. Two other players that I would expect to contribute more as the season moves along are Kansas transfer forward Zach Clemence, and North Carolina State transfer Guard Marcus Hill, who scored 2 and 6 points respectively in Aggie Hoops’ first game.

As for Texas Southern, they had no players score in double digits Monday night against Gonzaga, but who can blame them? Gonzaga is set up to potentially make a deep run this year in the tournament. The two leading scorers for the Tigers were a pair of senior Guards— Jaylen Wysinger and Duane Posey— who both recorded 8 points.

Not many promising things for the Tigers to build on from Monday night either. They shot an abysmal 25.4% from the floor, 14.3% from 3, and 58.8% from the free throw line. They were out-rebounded 56-27. The one potential bright spot for them was that they were able to force Gonzaga into 13 turnovers, although they gave up 17 themselves.

The optimism around Aggieland for Bucky McMillan and this Aggie basketball team is (dare I say it) palpable. After tonight’s matchup, the Aggies will look ahead towards their first true test of the season against Oklahoma State in Stillwater on Sunday.
