Why Dillon Brooks isn’t playing tonight vs. Warriors and what it means for Suns

The Phoenix Suns will look to keep their winning streak alive and improve to 4-4 against the Golden State Warriors on Tuesday at 10 p.m. ET, though they’ll remain without one of their top defenders.

Dillon Brooks is set to miss his fifth consecutive contest Tuesday due to a core muscle strain, according to the NBA’s official injury report. After being acquired from the Houston Rockets this offseason, Brooks appeared in the Suns’ first three regular-season games, averaging 19.3 points, 3.3 rebounds, 2.7 steals and 2.3 assists in 30.7 minutes per game.

While the Suns have certainly missed his two-way impact recently, there’s a possibility he could return to game action in the near future.

Dillon Brooks considered day-to-day

Head coach Jordan Ott said Saturday that Brooks had a “lower day” in practice, though he’s still considered day-to-day moving forward, according to Duane Rankin of The Arizona Republic.

“He’ll [Brooks] continue to be day-to-day, but there’s some progress there,” Ott said.

While the 29-year-old forward has been ruled out of two games since Ott stated he was day-to-day, the coach’s comments bode well for Brooks’ return in the near future.

Meanwhile, Royce O’Neale will likely remain in the starting lineup against the Warriors, while Ryan Dunn and Nigel Hayes-Davis are also candidates for increased minutes with Brooks sidelined.

As for the 2017 second-rounder, Brooks’ next opportunity to suit up will come in Thursday’s matchup against the Los Angeles Clippers. The Suns are expected to provide an update on his status by Wednesday night.
