Marcus Smart makes terrible mistake stepping over line in last seconds of Lakers vs. Spurs

Marcus Smart messed up.

There’s no other way of looking at what the Los Angeles Lakers’ veteran guard did with 1.2 seconds left in regulation against the San Antonio Spurs.

The Lakers held a 118-116 lead, and Smart had grabbed the ball to inbound.

He spotted a streaking teammate down the floor and rushed his action. Smart launched a quarterback-style pass without setting his feet.

The problem is this: Smart’s feet weren’t behind the baseline when he threw it. They weren’t even close.

And if a foot is over the line on an inbound, it’s a violation and a turnover to the other team.

The Spurs got the ball with 1.2 seconds, but luckily for Smart and the Lakers, they didn’t score and L.A. escaped with a win.

It was still an absolutely miserable moment for Smart. Teams let their veterans inbound because they trust them not to make silly mistakes.

But in a key spot against a good team, Smart made an inexplicable error.

In the long season, it might not matter much at all.

But on this night, it felt like something marvelously, terribly dumb.

The Lakers are just lucky it didn’t cost them a victory.
