What Actually Happened Between Chelsea and Mary on ‘Selling Sunset’? Their Feud, Explained

Selling Sunset is back on Netflix for what is potentially its most explosive season yet, as season nine sees Emma Hernan and Chrishell Stause come to blows over Emma’s new relationship, Nicole’s firing from the Oppenheim Group and the continuation of Mary and Chelsea’s ongoing feud. By why exactly have the pair fallen out?
The ninth season dropped October 29, and a prominent storyline was Mary and Chelsea refusing to fix their relationship. Across the season this culminated in some pretty dramatic moments, including Mary refusing to accept the flowers Chelsea sent her after she had a home invasion and Mary bursting into tears after seeing Chelsea’s name on a seating card at a dinner party in the season finale.
However, before we deep dive into this season’s drama what has caused the pair’s fallout in the first place? Here’s what you need to know about why Chelsea and Mary are no longer friends.
Why did Selling Sunset‘s Mary and Chelsea fall out?
Okay, so cast your mind back to season 8. Chelsea and Mary were working on a co-listing together and threw a massive open house for it in which the whole of the office was invited.
Mary was frustrated at Chelsea turning up late to the open house and then later criticized her outfit to their bosses Jason and Brett.
She said to the twins: “I just wanted to bring something up. Chelsea was an hour late. But then I’ve had a couple people come up to me and be like ‘what is she wearing?’ You know, it’s not professional. Like her butt and her hoo-ha is out.” For context Chelsea was wearing a blazer and a very short skirt.

Brett then pulled Chelsea into the conversation and said to her: “I love you but what do you think about toning the dress down 10% when we’re at a broker’s opening?”
Chelsea was then confused as to where the comments were coming from about her skirt. Chelsea then called Mary out for bringing up the conversation in front of the two men and also added that Mary does wear tops that show off her boobs. And from that moment onwards the pair’s relationship struggled.
What happened between Mary and Chelsea in season 9?
When season 9 opened, the two were still on bad terms. During the new season, Mary’s house was robbed and in an attempt at a good will gesture Chelsea sent her some flowers. However, Mary was upset when they turned up right in the middle of filming and believed that Chelsea had instigated the moment for the cameras.
Mary then stopped filming and asked producers if they had told Chelsea about when and where they were filming. Bre Tiesi then threw Chelsea’s flowers in the trash.
Speaking about the series Mary maintains she still questions Chelsea’s intentions with the flowers, telling US Weekly, “I don’t really know exactly what happened on that one. I disagree with what was said based on facts but I think there was some working together on their side for that to happen. That wasn’t a normal way to go about things—and there’s no way she could have known [what happened]. So there was some work going on between the two of them.”

Mary confronted Chelsea, who denied she had done it for the cameras and expressed her good wishes for Mary following the traumatic event.
In episode 8, during a dinner party Jason and Brett had thrown for Mary and her husband Romain, the pair spoke about the flowers and Chelsea denied doing it for the show.
“You’re here saying that I did it for the cameras. What do you think I need camera time for? B**ch they’ll get my face regardless. I don’t need f**king camera time,” she said.
Where do Chelsea and Mary stand now?
The series ended with Mary in tears after seeing Chelsea’s name on a table setting card at Bre’s dinner party, with Mary explaining to Us Weekly that the tears happened because: “I’m not upset because I see her name or that she was going to be there. There were some issues where I just don’t want any part of this. I’m a grown woman and I’m a professional. I don’t have this in my life and I’m not going to. I got upset and cried because of that. It was an actual issue. There were definitely things that were said afterwards that I don’t agree with and I won’t be around.”
Chelsea didn’t turn up to the dinner party, instead choosing to hang out with Emma and Chrishell.
Now, it seems the pair are still not on speaking terms, however Mary does follow Chelsea on Instagram, but Chelsea does not follow her back.
Selling Sunset season nine is available on Netflix now.
